Coming back from the surreal paradise of Bali where the golden sunset seemed to shield me from reality, an unsettling realisation hit me like a sucker punch. Looming university applications, mounting expectations, responsibilities—the comfort of escape gave way to the unavoidable demands of the real world.

In a similarly jarring shift, Europe is waking up to its own harsh reality. In a short and honest BBC interview, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered a sobering message: Europe is unprepared for war, Russia’s threat extends far beyond Ukraine, and the U.S. is no longer its guaranteed protector. His remarks signal a need for a dramatic shift in strategy—one that could reshape global politics in the coming decade.

One of Merz’s most blunt admissions was that Europe can no longer depend on America. For decades, the continent reclined in the comfort and safety of the U.S. military might, much like a traveler lost in the bubble of a tropical getaway until reality comes knocking. Now, with Washington pivoting to Asia and Donald Trump openly questioning NATO’s value, Europe finds itself flatfooted and scrambling, just as I had returned from Bali to face deadlines and decisions I’d postponed.

With the illusion of endless peace coming to an end, Europe is left vulnerable and left to stand on its own two feet. "We have been free riders," Merz admitted, acknowledging that Europe took U.S. guarantees for granted.

This leaves the question looming: will Europe adapt fast enough? With Russia rearming and America stepping back, is Europe ready to defend itself?
